Bridging the Gap

Hi everyone!

I know it’s been a long time. Yes, I have a ton of drafts started and even more in my head that never made it onto the typed screen. But, I’m really excited for this community!

I’m presenting at Bridging the Gap tomorrow, June 24, 2024, in Chicago, IL. Dave Kersting is my co-presenter and our title is “Belonging – Are You at The Table or On The Menu?” We’ve built a story of a young tax accountant who’s recently come out and is navigating his first professional job. Our intent is to highlight some of the struggles that we face and some of the coping mechanisms that we develop to fit in and minimize our own discomfort in the workplace. In the end, we want the attendees to walk away knowing more about our community and how to make a safe space, especially in potentially hostile environments.

I also met a great lady named Rebeccah who is working with Dave to develop more LGTBQ+ inclusive opportunities in the accounting space. She doesn’t know it yet, but I’m going to be pestering her to get more involved and help out.

Being out on the conference circuit is new to me, but I’m meeting so many wonderful members of our community and our allies, that I really think we’re on the right path. I’ll keep you updated on our progress and let you know what’s coming next. In order to get Intuit to sponsor a LGBTQ+ group of accountants, they want a formal organization, and it feels like now is the time to start it.

Hopefully, I’ll have more to write soon with updates on an official LGBTQ+ accounting organization!
