We celebrated Pride 2023, but the hard work isn’t done

As Pride Month comes to an end, the Supreme Court ruling today reminds us that we still need Pride Month to celebrate our accomplishments while continuing our fight for equality.

Unlike the text of the Declaration of Independence, the Supreme Court does not treat all citizens as created equal or deserving of the rights to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

This month we celebrated a lot of accomplishments that have happened fairly recently. Anniversaries such as 10 years ago when DOMA was overturned and 8 years ago when same-sex marriage was allowed nationwide give us hope of approaching a more equal society.

Today’s ruling emphasizes that we aren’t fully equal yet and don’t have all the rights of the Supreme Court’s “ideal” citizen. Neither do brown, black and female citizens. We all have to work together to continue our fight for equality and acceptance.

Don’t let your guard down now. We still have a long way to go. The fights against our trans brothers and sisters are really proxy fights against the entire LGBTQ+ community. Today’s ruling brings in a bunch of other minority communities into the fight.

We will be able to make more progress if we work together and highlight our commonalities. It starts with your individual families, friends, co-workers, and local communities.
